The Best Investment Advice Youll Get All Year

The Best Investment Advice Youll Get All Year The Best Investment Advice Youll Get All Year Like most people, Ive seen my 401(k) drop in value, the few stocks I own have taken a beating, and the value of my house has surely aufgabeen, although I havent asked since I dont plan on moving any time soon. None of these investments turn out to be worth what I thought they were and like, everyone else, Im now skittish about investing. Whats the point in saving for retirement if it can all be wiped out? Whats the point in investing in your home, if its value could drop below the value of your mortgage? If you feel the same way, theres one investment you can make that you wont ever regret an investment in yourself.Think about it if you invest in yourself, then the results are up to you. You wont be dependent on banking executives or mortgage brokers or politicians. Youll be dependent on you. What might that investment look like? That really depends on your circumstances and your dreams. For me , it means investing in growing my business. For you it might mean investing in professional job search help a good resume and search strategy can increase both your interviews and the salary offers you get. Or it may mean investing in further education did you know that unemployment among the college-educated is currently only around 4%, while the average for everyone else is heading for 10%? Maybe you have let some of your technical skills fall behind and classes would help. Maybe you could take classes to shore up areas of weakness, such as public speaking or leadership.Perhaps youve always wanted your own business but havent wanted to risk your savings on pursuing that dream. Or maybe you have your own business, but havent updated your website or marketing materials in years. And if youre short of money, dont forget that an investment doesnt have to be financial. Your private office messages are never actually private

Your private office messages are never actually privateYour private office messages are never actually privateThe rise of instant messaging platforms being used in our workplaces has made communication more efficient and productive- and casual. Its this factorthat can be especially dangerous for businesses and employees. We all get a little loose sometimes, treating work as if its home and maybe getting too familiar with coworkers. The integralrechnung of pictures and video, like GIFS and emoji, into office chats encourage acasual tone where lips get loosenedand gossip flows easily in a stream ofscreenshots and Michael-Jackson-eating-popcorn gifs.In this funenvironment, it can become all too easy to fool ourselves into thinking that our private communications of jokes and gossip are just between us.Theyre elend. All of your internal communications on business software usually belong to your employer, no matter how banal, as seen by the trial between the Gawker media company and profess ional wrestler Hulk Hogan, in which thousands of private messages between journalists became a matter of public record. Editor Max Read recounted the surreal experience of watching his former co-worker explain a Hogan joke he had made in a 2012 internal chat to opposing counsel. The chats were a bibles worth of career-compromising comments, some of which would make me very uncomfortable (if not unemployable) if it got out - a wealth of gossip and prattle I should have just conducted inperson, he wrote.Hislessonis one that has been reinforcedby a long line of people having their private chats and emails exposed youre being watched by servers and employers, so watch what you say.Have your sensitive conversations face-to-faceYou can avoid putting yourself in a precarious position by telling your colleagues to move a conversation face-to-face when a discussion could get dicey. That doesnt mean that you can say inappropriate things face-to-face and expect them to vaporize immediately peop le have memories and they will repeat your comments no matter where they hear them or see them. But it does mean youre much better off if people with bad motivations cant take a screenshot of your comments and take them out of context. Its also good practice in general to discuss sensitive subjects in person. Tone can be hard to read over messages.Although the onlineplatforms themselves foster thisparty environment where any GIF goes, they also caution against employees falsely thinking that theirfun communications are private. Slack, a popular platform with over a million users, stands for Searchable Log of All Communication and Knowledge.Through Slacks Plus plan, employers can access all of your direct messages, chats and files from public and private channels. It is important to remember that it is still business software, Slack Julia Blystone told NPR about the chat platformsprivacy limitations, and anything you communicate on a workplace device using a workplace network may ultim ately belong to your employer. One long-term stepto avoiding embarrassing fallouts is educating yourself about cybersecurity and what your companys Information Technology policies are. Surveillance is generally on the side of the employer and employee monitoring tools are only getting more sophisticated and lucrative. According to the tech firm 451 Research, employee monitoring is a$200 million-a-year industry.Your downloads and web surfing are visible to your company tooEmployee trackinggoes beyond just what you say. The future of employee monitoring is in trackingwhat you do in the workplace.Take the example ofAnthony Levandowski, who was accused of taking Waymo trade secrets to his new employer Uber. Analysts believe that Waymo used employee monitoring tools to figure out Levandowski had allegedly downloaded confidential files.Being cautious about what you communicate via instant message is one part of being aware of this new landscape. As any lawyer will remind you, anything writ ten down can become asubpoenable, permanent record for the court of your peers to judge. Even if it doesnt go that far, it can be part of a paper trail that can cause you trouble. Think twice before writing down anything you wouldnt want to explain one day in court or in front of HR.If youre a manager, you can regularly remind employees that their communications at work arent private, especially on official equipment like company-issued cellphones and laptops.Network administrators can see every website and every bit of traffic that comes from the companys servers. And if you see a coworker not doing himself or herself any favors in their use of office chat, slip them a reminder.Your social media accounts are also not totally privateAnother risk is social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn in which users are easily identifiable even if you think an account is yours personally, what you say on it could get you fired, like one banker whose inappropriate overtures on LinkedIn r esulted in him losing his high-paying job.And if you cant avoid doing a sensitive conversation online, consider using the secure, end-to-end encryption messaging platform ofSignal. But keep in mind in some industries, like finance, all your work-related conversations have to be visible for legal reasons. Even printers have a fingerprint that show where printed pages came from. Theres no way to really keep something private using technology.

Avoiding Common Mistakes on Google Resumes

Avoiding Common Mistakes on Google ResumesAvoiding Common Mistakes on Google ResumesGoogle has one of the strictest hiring regimes in the world. Aside from the fur cornerstones of their recruitment process (high standards, internal recruitment, objectivity and candidate-benefit), they also employ an entire committee of people to approve the hiring of top talent. On the other hand, the recruitment manager can say no to any candidate on their own. Meaning, they receive millions of applicants per year and it only takes one person to say no, compared to a group of people to say yes. Your chances dont look great, do they? One of the most influential parts of the recruitment process is your resume submission. Mastering this step will give you a better chance at making an impact and getting noticed (and getting called for an interview). Laszlo Bock (former Senior Vice President of People Operations at Google) wrote about five common mistakes found on resumes sent in to google length, confide ntial information, formatting, typos and lies. Luckily, many of these issues can be solved using an resume.1. TyposA large portion of resumes have typos, more than half in fact. While not everyone needs to have the proficiency of a professional copy editor, typos can leave a (lasting) bad impression. With our builder, we have systems that notice spelling mistakes and typos to assist you. You can also use our ask for feedback feature for anything spell-checker doesnt catch. This way, you can rely on and your friends to spot problems where you may have missed them. 2. Length A good rule of thumb is to have one page for every ten years. However, far too many people ignore this sound advice. Using , there are many ways you can cut down on length. We have a compact template that cuts down on spacing and you can re-purpose elements such as our Certificates and Languages section. The tools are right in front of you to keep your resume concise and appealing. Check out how our users got h ired at, Booking.com, AIESEC, and more using well-designed one page resumes. 3. Formatting Laszlo recommends At least ten point font. At least half-inch margins. White paper, black ink, but this shouldnt be misinterpreted to mean all resumes have to have a standard format that can be found in a word document. The essence of Laszlos advice here is to have a clean, easily readable and aesthetically pleasing resume. At , this is something we do well. Take it from data scientist Pavel, I think that has a very good balance between aesthetics and content. Its straight to the point, its not too fancy. I respect that. He recently got hired at Booking.comConfidential informationWhen it comes to confidential information, its best to air on the side of caution. Client privacy should be at the top of your radar. Before spouting about how you increased X companys profit margins, think about whether or not youre at liberty to divulge that. When it comes towhoyour clients were, its best to leave them anonymous. This doesnt change what youve done you can still mention the achievement, but just in an anonymous way.Telling the truthNothing breaks down trust between a recruiter and the employee more than telling lies on your resume. In general, stay true to the things you have actually done. Its that simple. If youre caught out on a lie (and youre more than likely will be) this will cost you more opportunities than the lack of experience you think you have. When it comes to impressing GoogleGetting a job that youre passionate about is one of the best decisions you can make. Employees that enjoy their company culture are more likely to succeed. Therefore, taking the time to put your best foot forward to get the job you care about is very important. Hemp Carbon Makes Supercapacitors Superfast

Hemp Carbon Makes Supercapacitors Superfast Hemp Carbon Makes Supercapacitors Superfast Most people dont understand the truly diverse value of hemp (Cannabis sativa). Cultures have depended on this hardy plant for centuries for clothing, fabric, and paper. Today, it is also used for food, fuel, medicine, building materials, and plastics. Now the energy storage industry is starting to take notice, thanks to new Canadian research that shows supercapacitors with electrodes made from hemp-based carbon nanosheets outperform standard supercapacitors by nearly 200%. Graphene, a carbon nanomaterial, is considered to be one of the best materials for supercapicitor electrodes. Graphene is, however, expensive to manufacture, costing as much as $2,000 per gram. Looking for a less-costly solution, researchers at the University of Alberta/National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT) NRC, and Alberta Innovates-Technology Futures, led by chemical and materials engineering Professor David Mitlin, developed a process for converting fibrous hemp waste into a unique graphene-like nanomaterial that outperforms graphene. Whats more, it can be manufactured for less than $500 per ton. Our work actually opens up a very cheap and mass-producible manufacturing method for graphene-quality materialsomething that has never been achieved before, says Mitlin. Hemp bast fiber is a low-cost graphene-like nanomaterial. Image: Wikimedia Commons Why Hemp? Activated carbons, templated carbons, carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, and graphene have all been intensively studied as materials for supercapacitor electrodes. High manufacturing costs is one issueanother is that the power characteristics of many of these carbons are limited. This is a result of high microporosity, which increases ion transport limitations. It is becoming well understood that the key to achieving high power in porous electrodes is to reduce the ion transport limitations says Mitlin. Nanomaterials based on graphene and their hybrids have emerged as a new class of promising high-rate electrode candidatesthey are, however, too expensive to manufacture compared to activated carbons derived from pyrolysis of agricultural wastes, or from the coking operations. Biomass, which mainly contains cellulose and lignin by-products, is widely utilized as a feedstock for producing activated carbons. Mitlin decided to test hemp bast fibers unique cellular structure to see if it could produce graphene-like carbon nanosheets. Hemp fiber waste was pressure-cooked (hydrothermal synthesis) at 180 C for 24 hours. The resulting carbonized material was treated with potassium hydroxide and then heated to temperatures as high as 800 C, resulting in the formation of uniquely structured nanosheets. Testing of this material revealed that it discharged 49 kW of power per kg of materialnearly triple what standard commercial electrodes supply, 17 kW/kg. Promising Results Mitlin and his team successfully synthesized two-dimensional, yet interconnected, carbon nanosheets with superior electrochemical storage properties comparable to those of state-of-the-art graphene-based electrodes. We were able to achieve this by employing a biomass precursor with a unique structurehemp bast fiber, says Mitlin. The resultant graphene-like nanosheets possess fundamentally different propertiessuch as pore size distribution, physical interconnectedness, and electrical conductivityas compared to conventional biomass-derived activated carbons. The nanosheets ranged in thickness from 10 to 30 nm with high specific surface area ( 2200 m2 g-1) significant mesoporosity (up to 58 percent), and good electrical conductivity (211-226 S m-1). Mitlin indicates the nanosheets are compatible for various ionic liquid-based supercapacitor applications from about 0-100 C. At 0 C and a current density of 10 A g-1, the electrode maintains a remarkable capacitance of 106 F g-1, notes Mitlin. At 20, 60, and 100 C and an extreme current density of 100 A g-1, there is excellent capacitance retention (72%-92%). These characteristics favorably place the material among the best power-energy characteristics ever reported for an electrochemical capacitor. At a very high power density of 20 kW kg-1 and 20, 60, and 100 C, the energy densities are 19, 34, and 40 Wh kg-1, respectively. Moreover, adds Mitlin, the assembled supercapacitor device yielded a maximum energy density of 12 Wh kg-1significantly higher than those for commercially available supercapacitors. By taking advantage of the complex multilayered structure of a hemp bast fiber precursor, these high-performing carbons were created by simple hydrothermal carbonization combined with activation. We were delighted at how well this material performed as supercapacitor electrodes, says Mitlin. This novel precursor-synthesis route presents a great potential for facile large-scale production of high-performance carbons for a variety of diverse applications including energy storage, portable electronics, uninterruptable power sources, medical devices, load leveling, and hybrid electric vehicles. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. The Graduation Paradox

The “Graduation” Paradox The “Graduation” Paradox You finally have your degree and you’re ready to take the world by storm, land your dream job, become a future CEO of a large corporation, and make a real change in the world. You’re beyond excited to explain your diverse skillset and your amazing potential to the first person who has the honor of reading your resume. When youre just out of college, its easy to get a big head about what you can do in the workplace. Unfortunately, chances are youll need to clean the proverbial toilet for a while before youre given any real responsibility. This means you need to show off your work ethic even if youre stuck doing tasks you dont like. That’s the cold, hard truth and also why your resume shouldn’t necessarily reflect your current frame of mind. There is only one thing that needs to come across very clear in your resume: You’re ready to start at the bottom and you’re ready to GET TO WORK. A graduating senior who understands where he fits in the marketplace is the one who gets the interview. We read far too many entry-level resumes that read like the next Elon Musk, but that’s not who people want to hire for the position of “Junior Marketing Analyst”.   Your ambitions are a wonderful thing, but your resume needs to show that you’re not above sweeping the floors at the end of the day. It might sound like simply paying your dues, but its easy to get a little full of yourself when you apply for your first job. However, when you show you are willing to do [the boring work] and do it well, about 10% of the time you get to do the fun stuff. You get to dress something and make it look cooler, or you get to solve a problem. If you do  that  well, you get to do a little more of it. Then a little more You have to dedicate yourself to the drudgery, and doing the legwork thats not fun or glamorous No one comes out of college or trade school knowing what they need to succeed down the line. Our advice? Show them youre up to working hard no matter what the job is. You might be smart and clever, but a solid work ethic is the main thing thatll separate you from all the other viable candidates.

10 Things to Consider Before You Accept a New Job Offer

10 Things to Consider Before You Accept a New Job Offer 10 Things to Consider Before You Accept a New Job Offer Very few of us will retire from the same employer that gave us our first job out of school. While some of those job changes might be involuntary, due to a layoff or termination or other circumstances beyond our control, eventually, well be the ones to say goodbye. That means knowing when to stay and when to go â€" and being aware that its not always easy to tell the difference at first glance. You dont need to accept an offer for a new job just because someone offered it to you. Sometimes, it might make sense to take a job you dont want  but not always.   Will You Earn More? Money isnt everything, but you cant enjoy much of anything without it- constant worry about finances has a way of taking the joy out of life. While a higher salary isnt the only reason to take a job, most people want to see a steady increase in salary over time. If your present employer doesnt offer much in the way of regular raises (and if they dont, theyre not alone- in one survey, cost-of-living adjustments for 2018 were estimated at 3%), your best bet might be to move on to greener pastures. Of course, before you take the cash and run, you better make sure it adds up to as much as you hope. Compensation isnt just a matter of whats printed on your paycheck. Make sure you arent trading higher contributions to health insurance or other before-tax benefits for a slightly higher paycheck... which will go to pay for those self-same benefits.  Use these free paycheck calculators to figure out what your net income will be. What Are You Giving Up? Unless your job is truly wretched, there are probably a few things you like about it, even if its just the people you work with or an easy commute. Make sure youre looking at all the pros and cons of leaving and staying before you make up your mind- even if, in the end, its a pretty easy call. Is There Room for Growth? If youre like most people, you probably dont want to change jobs every year for the rest of your life, but you need to know that youll meet new challenges and learn new skills, even when you stay put. Ideally, your new role should come with the possibility of growing into another, more responsible position at the same company. Nothing like moving up the corporate ladder without having to roll over your 401(k). Is the Corporate Culture Comfortable? Everyone has their own idea of a good time, and thats as true professionally as it is personally. While you might look at an open-plan office and see one big party of creativity and collaboration, another person might cringe and go running back to their cube. If possible, ask to take a tour of the office during your interview process. Pay close attention to the physical space, noise level, demeanor and behavior of the staff, etc. Do you see yourself working well there, and feeling comfortable? Theres no perfect company, but there is a perfect company for you. Did You Like Your New Co-Workers? You cant tell everything about your future co-workers by what you see during your interview, but you can get a general vibe of what kind of personality shines at the company. Can you see yourself working well with people, respecting them, learning from them? Will You Learn Something New? Theres no way to be 100 percent sure that youll love your new job, but if you can learn a new skill while youre there, youll have moved the needle on your career, no matter what. Are You Improving Your Opportunities? Lets say the worst happens, and you hate your new job- or your new boss foolishly decides youre not a good fit. Will moving to this new position put you in a better or worse place than youre in right now? Ideally, youre leaving your current role to move to a situation in which youll gain experience, knowledge, skills, and a positive brand association that will help you in your career long after youve left your next job. What Is Employee Turnover at the New Employer? You hate stress, but this company is famous for making grown men weep in the middle of the office. You value diversity, but everyone who stays long enough for their stock to vest hangs out at the same alumni club. If you want to know whether youll be happy and successful at a job, look at the folks who left or were forced out. If you resemble them more than the people who stayed, you could be in trouble. Is the New Company Financially Sound? Your new employer could be the perfect place for you, and your new job the ideal role- but if the company isnt around long enough for you to get your first review, it wont matter. Do your due diligence before accepting an offer. If the company is public, you may be able to glean some information on their financial stability from public filings and reports. You can also dig up some information with a simple Google search and perusal of their social media mentions. Bearing in mind, of course, that electronic gossip is likely to be as complete a picture as the old-fashioned kind that takes place around the water cooler- which is to say, it isnt. Thats OK, though: you dont need to know everything. You just need to get a sense of whether there might be trouble ahead. Will It Help You Along Your Career Path? Just as your last job wasnt, well, your last job neither is this one likely to be. Make sure that your next step leads in the right direction, and not into a corner. Careers can and do zigzag, but you need to be able to keep moving.

The Hiring Process From 3 Perspectives

The Hiring Process From 3 Perspectives The Hiring Process From 3 Perspectives When Anthony C. opened his title and escrow company, he knew one of his first steps would be to find a controller, and the hiring process had to be just right. Janiece L. had worked with a staffing agency when she was a bookkeeper to bring in seasonal accounting help, and again after she’d studied for her accounting degree. When it was time for her to find a new job as a controller, she knew just who to call. Dianne LaValley, a senior vice president for Finance Accounting, rose to the occasion. She’d already worked with both Anthony and Janiece, and as a specialist with 20 years of experience in recruiting and placing financial professionals, she knew how to make a match, despite today's hiring challenges in finance and accounting. Janiece is now the controller at Anthony’s company, and Dianne is still working behind the scenes to help companies and job seekers meet their objectives. Looking back, how do each of them describe the hiring process? We caught up with all three to get their stories. A CEO with a lot on his plate Q: You gave the hiring process an A+. Can you describe your experience? Anthony: “The year was full of challenges - from the buying/closing process to brand creation and staffing of a new company. When it came time to filling the controller position, I budgeted for recruiting services. As we grow as an operation, this is going to be a key position. We wanted a controller who is going to be with us for years to come. Do you want help in hiring finance and accounting staff? WORK WITH US “Dianne helped to parse through resumes and weed out those who weren’t the right professional or cultural fit. She pared it down to three candidates, and we decided on two interviews. We received the resumes ahead of time, and she kept it fast and efficient. We had 30 minutes to interview each person, one right after another. The process worked well, because we could easily compare one interviewee against another. “My colleague and I both knew who we wanted to hire after the interviews, and we extended an offer and hired Janiece.” A controller looking for the right fit Q: Why did you choose to work with a recruiting firm, and how would you describe the process of working with a job recruiter? Janiece: “I’d worked with Dianne back when I was doing the hiring, and I was happy with her service. When I decided I needed a new job, I knew I needed to reach out to her again. “I had been self-employed for so long that I didn’t have the time or knowledge about how to get myself out there. I also didn’t have any referrals except coworkers. She first placed me in a position that was a great learning experience in healthcare. After a year and a half, I wanted to continue to grow but needed to conduct a confidential search and reached out to her again. “Dianne was great at identifying where I was or wasn't a good fit. She knew what I was capable of and took the time to learn what the client needed and could offer. I interviewed with Anthony, the CEO, and was hired within a day or two.” A hiring process built on relationships Q: How did you meet Anthony and Janiece and use your expertise to bring them together so quickly? Dianne: “I met Anthony through networking, and we kept in touch over the years. I’d helped him with previous staffing needs, so when he decided to launch a new business and hire a controller, he called me, and we met over coffee. Meanwhile, my mind was spinning, thinking of people who would work best for him. “I’d met Janiece when she was a bookkeeper at a company she co-owned. She needed some seasonal financial help, so in the next two years, I helped her to staff various roles and got to know her well. Later, when she decided to leave the company and go back to school, she called me about finding a new position. An opportunity arose with a healthcare company, and even though she didn’t have experience in that industry, they hired her. She was driven and poised, and she ended up helping them with a merger before she called me again to ask about job possibilities. “The timing was perfect, and I got in touch with Anthony. It was a quick turnaround, because Janiece has a calm demeanor, very much like his, and she was able to bring so much to the table with her experience setting up a new company.” Suggestions from the recruiter Q: Is this a typical scenario for an employer and a job seeker in today’s job market? Dianne: “This is just one of many stories I have like this, where I have a long-term relationship and can say, ‘Oh my, I’ve got your person!’ I make sure I get to know the people I work with so I can make that ideal match. “Some candidates, like Janiece, are in a passive job search in finance and accounting, and I tell my clients professionals like her are not going to apply to their ads. Almost every city is small enough that you can’t just throw your resume out there if you’re looking confidentially and don’t want your current employer to know you’re looking. Q: Do you have any suggestions for others out there, either hiring or hoping to be hired? Dianne: “Recruiting is about relationship building, and job seekers and hiring managers should connect with someone they trust who listens to them.” Endorsement from the job seeker Q: What do you tell others about the benefits of partnering with a recruiter in a job search? Janiece: “The first time I sent in my resume, Dianne made sure I included everything. There was technology testing, typing, an Excel knowledge test, general accounting questions and background testing. She also met with me for quite awhile in person. She was easy to work with, both by phone and email. She answered or got right back to me. “For my current position, we’d worked together enough where we didn’t need to meet in person, and because of Dianne’s connections, she knew about the opening at the title company before it was posted. I am happy in my current role.” The conclusion from the boss Q: Would you choose again for your hiring needs? Anthony: “Oh yes, in a heartbeat.” How a recruiter can help you hire Whether you’re a business owner or CFO, you may need help in the hiring process at some point during the year. You don’t have to do it alone. When tapping the extensive networks of a specialized recruiting firm, you get access to a larger talent pool than you might discover yourself in today’s job market. A recruiter can also help you evaluate candidates based on the required skills, performance expectations, organizational fit and work experience.

Nylons 75 Year Run

Nylons 75 Year Run Nylons 75 Year Run Nylon̢۪s 75 Year Run Its won wars and fueled riots. In between its become an ubiquitous material for a host of engineering applications. Happy 75th birthday to nylon, the worlds first totally synthetic engineered fiber. DuPont began mass producing nylon in 1939, after more than a decade of research and development in the uncharted territory of polymer chemistry and engineering. Wallace Hume Carothers feat had social consequences that continue to ripple through modern life. The atomic structure of nylon 6 and nylon 6,6. Image: Wikimedia Commons Due to both its antiquity and its ubiquity, its easy to take nylon for granted today. But the material is still holding its own among newer advanced thermoplastics. Take the fast-moving world of 3-D printing, for example. Stratasys (Eden Prairie, MN) markets a nylon-12 material for fused deposition modeling (FDM) applications on its Fortus production systems, reporting performance improvements of 100% to 300% better elongation at break, better fatigue resistance, superior impact strength, and top Z-axis lamination than other thermoplastics for FDM. Taulman 3D (St. Louis, MO) focuses on the material in its line of resins specified, among other applications, for a wide range of medical and prosthetic uses. Clinical tests of 3D printed bone and cartilage using Taulmans medical grade nylon resins could lead to the ability for rapid, customized replacement of broken bones and other injuries that would otherwise require multiple surgeries. But modern interest in nylon pales in comparison to the mania it inspired 75 years ago. Stronger than Silk In the 1930s, people still relied mainly on materials made from the same plant- or animal-derived fibers that had been in use for centuries. Silk, hemp, cotton, cellulose, linen, wool, and stiff animal hair were the materials of choice for everything from toothbrushes to fishing line to underwear. Like all natural products, they were prone to breakage, decay, and bacteria. Early partial synthetics like Bakelite and rayon provided novel alternatives but only inspired companies like DuPont to keep looking for better, totally engineered synthetic fibers. Wallace Hume Carothers, chemist at DuPont and inventor of nylon. Image: Wikimedia Commons DuPont hired Carothers, a Harvard chemist, in 1928 to lead the search at the companys recently established Experimental Station in Delaware. Modeled after the early legendary industrial laboratories at Bell Telephone and General Electric, DuPonts new facility was built for pure research to produce new knowledge of fundamental concepts, which was a revolutionary new role for science in the industrial setting. Carothers spent years studying the mysterious process of polymerization the linking of multiple monomers into repeating chains to form macromolecules. The unique molecular structure of experimental polymers lend materials unusual physical properties suggesting potential industrial use but no one knew why, let alone how to control the polymerization process in a manufacturing environment. Carothers work led first to a synthetic rubber replacement, neoprene. By 1935, his team had identified a group of polyamide compounds that could be produced as a strong fiber that tolerated heat and solvents. Meanwhile, DuPont had already identified a key end market for such a textile fiber: womens hosiery. By the time scientists had landed on the formula for nylon as we now know it, DuPont was ready to introduce the revolutionary nylon stocking to an eager American public. Nylon reportedly started out as Nuron at least according to an account attributed to former DuPont Nylon Division Manager Ernest Gladding. Underscoring the market value of a fiber that would provide women of the era with a durable, easier-to-care-for alternative to silk stockings, the name nuron is also the backward spelling of no run the primary claim to fame of nylon stockings. Although the name was discarded for other reasons, it influenced the final choice. Interestingly, DuPont never registered the word nylon as a trademark, hoping instead that it would become the popular generic which it did. American women were introduced to nylons at the 1938 Worlds Fair in New York. Mass production started the next year, and retailers began selling them in 1940 to immediate success. At least for a year or so. Nylon debuts at the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York. Image: Wikimedia Commons Winning a War, Losing a Battle Even before the U.S. formally entered World War II, souring trade relations with Asian suppliers of silk and rubber threatened U.S. supplies, spurring an intensive scientific effort to find domestic sources or manmade replacements for these critical materials. The increasing industrial build-up put tight restrictions on the use of wood or metal for anything other than defense purposes. Nylons introduction was perfectly timed. When U.S. airborne forces landed at Normandy on D-Day, they got there by nylon power. The parachutes and glider tow ropes that got the first airborne troops into action were nylon. On the ground, nylon was found in soldiers tents, outerwear, mosquito netting, and medical supplies, and in the valves, cams, gears, tires, and ball bearings powering the machines of war. With traditional sources of many of these materials off limits, U.S.-made nylon and other new polymers played a critical role in the wars outcome. After the hostilities, however, the laws of nylon supply and demand were anything but peaceful. Non-military uses of nylon had been banned during the war, but DuPont immediately resumed production of womens stockings afterward. The first supplies hit stores in late 1945. DuPonts initial supply, however, fell dramatically short of the pent-up demand. Mobs of shoppers turned out to buy the coveted items, only to find empty shelves. The frustration boiled over into fights, vandalism, and bogus accusations of a publicity stunt by DuPont. For the ensuing year it took to ramp up production, Nylon Riots raged in cities from San Francisco to New York. Its impossible to know what nylons inventor, Wallace Carothers, would have made of the uproar. He died tragically well before the nylon stockings original debut. Despite his scientific success and recent marriage, the brilliant chemist struggled with depression and ultimately committed suicide in 1937. Fittingly, his final act in life was to mix his lethal dose of cyanide with lemon juice, a chemical synthesis he knew would accelerate his death. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. For Further Discussion When U.S. airborne forces landed at Normandy on D-Day, they got there by nylon power.

4 Awesome Traits You Can Learn From Your Interns - The Muse

4 Awesome Traits You Can Learn From Your Interns - The Muse 4 Awesome Traits You Can Learn From Your Interns Remember when you were just starting out in your industry? Everything was new, and everyone you worked with had valuable insight about your job and how to do it well. As you gained more experience, you’ve inevitably lost some of that energy and humility you had when you were an intern. And while no one exactly misses going on coffee runs for the whole crew, there are a few things that go hand-in-hand with being at the bottom that you might’ve been too quick to let go of. For example, when you’re bright-eyed and only have more to learn in your industry, you bring a much different perspective to the table. You’re quicker to ask questions, get to know people, and tackle company problems that intrigue you. How do you keep that fresh spirit alive? By fostering these four timeless traits throughout your career, no matter where you fall in the hierarchy. 1. Eagerness to Learn If you’re the type to ask questions, observe and take notes, or generally treat people as though you could learn something from everyone, then you’re probably thinking like an intern. Muse Full-Stack Engineer Shlomo Dalezman says that’s something he admires most from working with his engineering intern this past summer. “One of the most positive traits he brought to the team was not being afraid to ask for help or to take initiative,” explains Dalezman. “I know sometimes it’s a bit tough because there can be so much going on- and it can be intimidating to ask for help- but it’s a very valuable skill set to have.” As you become a more senior professional, you’re likely going to run into more and more moments in which you feel as though you should know everything about a problem and how to handle it. But asking for help, however vulnerable it may feel at the time, helps you gain new perspective and add value to the process. After all, no one likes the guy who acts as though he’s learned all there is to know about his industry. And by being open with your skill level and actively asking how you can improve, you’ll get ahead much faster. 2. Stepping Outside the Assigned Job Duties How many people do you know who operate only within their job descriptions? When was the last time you heard someone say that a task wasn’t her responsibility? Whether or not something fits the bullet points they read when they got hired, interns are always ready to be team players. “At any company, there are always things that don’t get done or pushed to the back burner simply because no one has the time to do them,” explains Muse Editor-in-Chief Adrian Granzella Larssen. Improvements that aren’t urgent or mandatory, however ideal, don’t always get tended to in the daily operations of a business. That’s where interns come in. They bring a can-do attitude that can dust off ideas that usually go neglected. “I’ve had several interns who’ve picked up projects like this, simply by asking something like, ‘Hey, I see that no one’s spending time on the company Pinterest page. I’d love to help out there’ and taking it on in addition to their typical duties,” Larssen says. “I love when people come to the table with new energy and new eyes and a willingness to go above and beyond to learn something new and help the company.” And I get it- you can’t always stay late putting time and energy into a project outside of your main responsibilities. But if a co-worker needs a hand with his project, or you notice a public workspace could use some reorganizing, it’s definitely worth considering hanging back once or twice a week to make small incremental changes. Think a new app can streamline a process better in your office? Be open to stepping up and taking that on. It could really add value to your company (not to mention, get you noticed by the higher-ups). 3. Resourcefulness I’m the kind of worker who needs everything in place to start a project, whether that’s quotes for an article, type content for a new design, or anything else. In some ways, that can really speed up the process once you get started, but if you’re not careful, it can also act as an obstacle. Muse Social Media Manager Allie Hunt weighed in on her intern’s resourcefulness: “When she’s working on a new project, she takes initiative to ask smart and thoughtful questions (to the right people), communicates and collaborates with other team members, and does all the necessary research to make sure the quality of her work is strong.” Not everyone goes the extra mile to communicate and research every step of the way. And doing so, as Hunt explains, is “a trait that stands out, and really makes anyone such a pleasure to work with.” 4. Building Relationships on Other Teams According to Larssen, an excitement for a holistic understanding of the company is priceless. “Most of the editorial interns we’ve had at The Muse are eager to learn not only about the inner workings of the editorial department, but also how the business operates as a whole, and they’ve gone out of their way to sit down with and learn from people across the company,” she recalls. Now think: How many people do you know in other departments of your company, actually? It can feel awkward trying to branch out to other teams, I know, but doing so shows a valuable interest in the company community- in addition to your daily responsibilities. It says: I’m not just here because you’re paying me to be. “That can be really valuable no matter what stage you’re at in your career- it can help you get perspective on how your role fits in to the broader organization, meet new people or strengthen relationships, and show that you care about the success of the business as a whole, not just doing your job,” explains Larssen. Are internships going to be the most exciting part of your career? Probably not- but there’s virtue in that phase of life. Being in a learning position on a team forces you to be open-minded and receptive, in a way that age and experience doesn’t always allow you to be. So no matter how far you advance, remember to keep your intern attitude front and center- it can only get you further, faster.
